Adelle Davis Invented Granola

Who Invented Granola?

Adelle Davis invented granola as we know it today (recipe below). The first use of the word Granola in the United States was in Toledo, Ohio, by Dr. Connor Harold Lacey at the Jackson Sanitarium in 1894. Lacy was credited with many of the “firsts” health and nutrition during the early twentieth century’s health movements. Lacey’s Granola was comprised of Graham flour, much like large Grape-Nuts not oats which we know granola to be today. Adelle Davis’ essential ingredients are oats, soy, bran, oil, and honey not a graham flour cereal.

Adelle Davis created granola as a snack, not as a cereal which many in the 1950s did. Adelle Davis’s authored some of the first granola recipes in the 1940s, Davis’ granola was then popularized though the 1960s with hippie movement along with Davis’ many publications. At the time, several people claim to have revived or re-invented granola however, Adelle Davis had printed, published and distributed her granola for decades.

Adelle Daivs’ very popular book  Let’s Cook It Right published in 1947, describes cooking techniques which retain both the natural flavor and the vitamin and mineral content of foods, including granola made with oats.

Davis granola, cooking techniques, heath ideas made he views on nutrition very popular on television, radio and bookstores worldwide. Davis a nutritionist, did a great job making cooking healthy. Books like Let’s Cook it Right, and Let’s Eat Right To Keep Fit among others. Recipes always have several variations, making it easy to work with.
